Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release
However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were given physical binders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
