The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
